Robotics and Artificial Intelligence will boost the performance

Emerging new technologies will change the way of work: Software-Robotics, Neural Network and Simulation-AI. For early adaptors they provide competitive advantages.

SW-Robotics means work processes automation in a way that imitates the specialist doing the work. The benefits are multitude. Robotic solution is able to do the process in average five times faster and without labor costs. In addition, it will make human work more meaningful, since a robot now does the unmotivated routine work. Thus, in long-term there will be improvement at the staff quality of working life. For knowledge work, the benefits are similar as what technology has done for labor-intensive work. No worker wants to hammer, if there is possible to use nail-gun, or shovel when proper excavator is available.

Workers may fear the robotization at first, because it will change the way of work. Therefore, the change management is essential to consider in advance. Workers needs knowledge and skills to deal with SW-robotics. Essential question: are the staff motivated to train the SW-robot. Do employees feel that the change is a threat or is it an opportunity? Robot liberates time to learn other skills and do work that is more meaningful. Working time is scarce resource and lack-of time is general obstacle for business development. When time problem eases, the human intelligence can flourish.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an assistant with predictive and explaining power. For organizations, there are two types of AI: Neural Networks (NN) and Simulation-AI. They both help management and specialists’ decision-making. NN finds correlations from organization data and learns the cause-relations (causalities). In simple cases, it can predict the outcome and alarm for doing preventive actions. For example, it knows that exceeding overwork will cause increase in absenteeism. The data consists business data, human resource data, working time data and staff QWL data.

The simulation-AI is for more complex problem solving. Simulation-AI knows how the organization works. We have created Bayesian People Analytics simulation with AI. Bayesian means that management behavior affects to the business outcome. We all know it, but how to make it visible. Actually, the phenomenon is too complex for human mind. Human mind is driven by intuitive decision making with several human biases. The simulation-AI helps to improve organization behavioral capital by showing the decisions consequences in the future. New science opens the “black-box” of HRM-Performance. It has both predictive and explaining power, and artificial intelligence helps finding the best leadership practices.

The word of warning. The AI-solution is as wise as the data and the architecture of AI algorithms. If data or algorithms are poor, the advice may be harmful either short or long term. Be critical, ask what is the scientific foundation at the algorithms and does the AI has explanatory power over the predictions.
